Eukote Energy LLC, a group company of Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation, has been selected for sponsorship Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), in its project "Research on Construction and Operation of High-voltage DC Transmission System from Offshore Wind Power, etc." (hereafter “the study"). Eukote Energy was chosen for the study together with co-proponents, Research Institute for Ocean Economics and J-Power Transmission Network Co, Ltd.

Currently, the Japanese government is considering the formulation of a "master plan" to reinforce the country’s power system for the potential introduction of a large amount of renewable energy and strengthening of resilience in the future.

Approximately 80% of offshore wind developments, which have a major impact on the master plan, are concentrated in Hokkaido, Tohoku and Kyushu. As the large-scale, long distance transmission of electricity will be necessary from those regions to areas of high power consumption, discussions have begun on the use of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) power transmission, which is advantageous in regards to cost, transportation efficiency, operational flexibility, and system stability.

Use of a submarine DC power transmission line is conceivable for the long distance large-capacity power transmission across the sea, but there are few precedents in Japan and it is necessary to examine the feasibility in more detail.

The purpose of the study is to clarify technical issues related to these transmission options, by investigating the feasibility of equipment configuration and installation, and to examine the prospects for its early realization.

Research period From July  2021 to  March  2022
Description of the study

1.Research of detailed routes for DC power transmission

2.Study of facilities required for DC power transmission

3.Examination of costs and construction schedule for DC power transmission

4.Overseas research (latest trends in 1-3, maintenance and operation of DC power transmission systems, latest regulations, etc.)

Eukote Energy LLC

Eukote Energy LLC was established in April 2020 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation, a leading company in the wind power generation industry in Japan. The main business activity of Eukote Energy is comprehensive feasibility research from the perspectives of technology, economics, environment and other aspects of the new power grid system. The company name “Eukote” means "connect" in the language of Ainu People (the original inhabitants of Hokkaido area).
